Sega used to be a company that was known for producing highly innovative 3D racing titles back in the 90’s. Before the Gran Turismo series started on the PS1 back in 1997 Sega gave us racing classics like Scud Race, Outrunners, Virtua Racing and Daytona USA. We eventually got to see Crazy Taxi in arcade centers during the late 90’s and it ended up becoming a cult classic that many people still have fond memories about to this day. During the early 2000’s we got to see the release of Outrun 2 and the game ended becoming way better than it had any business being at the time. Outrun 2006: Coast to Coast was also a game that ended up becoming one of the better arcade racing titles of the 2000’s along with various other titles. When it comes down to the racing genre of gaming Sega seemingly dominated most of the 90’s especially since the put out better titles than Nintendo did in relation to that category. While Sonic the Hedgehog has been the best thing Sega has going for them for the past three decades they could have definitely created more racing games within the Outrun or Sega Rally series. The last major game we got to see in the Sega Rally series came out in 2008 but it was never ported to any particular game system. We also never got to see another major Outrun title since 2006 which is a shame because Outrun 3 is something that people would love to see. While many critics would argue that the arcade racing genre of gaming is obsolete in comparison to the more sophisticated racing games that we have in the Forza series today they were still a ton of fun back in the 90’s and 2000’s. It also feels like the Gran Turismo series has grown stale in the eyes of many people within the past couple of years comparison to the Forza series. Even though, Sega was great at producing entertaining racing titles back in the day it seems highly unlikely that they would be able to compete with franchises including the Gran Turismo, Forza or the Need For Speed series for that matter.
