It seems like the landscape of gaming has changed significantly since Microsoft has completed its multi-billion dollar acquisition of Activision-Blizzard. As it currently stands stands Microsoft owns multiple franchises that are very popular in relation to modern gaming including Call of Duty, Diablo, Overwatch, StarCraft along with World of WarCraft. We all know that Sony’s response to Microsoft $68.7 acquisition of Activision-Blizzard involved purchasing Bungie the developer for the older Halo games that remained exclusively on Xbox consoles during the 2000’s. Sony’s purchase of Bungie had cost $3.6 billion and it was a move that caught the gaming industry by surprise since the Halo series had always stood out more on Xbox opposed the PlayStation consoles. It seems like battle lines have been drawn by both Microsoft and Sony and more likely than not another major acquisition could occur sometime within the next few years or so. Some believe that developers such as Capcom or Square Enix could eventually end up being acquired by Sony or Microsoft. At this point it would probably make more sense for Sony to acquire Capcom especially since franchises like Street Fighter, Monster Hunter and Resident Evil shine more on PlayStation consoles than Xbox. It should also be noted that PlayStation 5 is currently more popular than the Xbox Series X at the moment since it has managed to surpass 40 million units in worldwide sales in less than three years. While Sony acquiring Capcom would be a move that would also change the landscape of gaming the masses would probably prefer that the Japanese video game company remains a third party entity in relation to the console wars.
