Mortal Kombat is arguably the most popular video game franchise of all-time and the series has gained a ton of momentum and popularity within the past few years. During the start of the 2010’s lapsed fans of the series began to become interested in the Mortal Kombat series following the release of MK9 in 2011. Ever since MK9 it seems like the fanbase of Mortal Kombat had continued to grow throughout the decade especially following the popularity and success of MK10 and MK11 between 2015-2019. Following the success of Mortal Kombat 11 from 2019 we eventually got to see the release of animated films including Mortal Kombat: Scorpion’s Revenge (2020), Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms (2021) and Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind (2022). Based on the reception the Mortal Kombat animated films have received within the past three years its safe to say the MK series still has what it takes to crossover outside the realm of gaming into the movie and television scene. The last time we got a Mortal Kombat animated series was back in the mid 90’s which came out about a year after the first MK film from 1995. Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm from ’96 was one that has heavily criticized following its release because was almost every bit as bad as the Street Fighter: Animated Series from 1995. While the Street Fighter: Animated series was at least passable enough to get two seasons Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm was cancelled after its first one. While Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm was a product of Midway Games we all know for a fact that Warner Bros. Animation has the potential to produce a far better MK animated series. However, animated films are probably better for the Mortal Kombat series opposed to a television series that could eventually get stale after a certain period of time.
