It seems like Sony has been making headlines on social media again but this time for all the wrong reasons. It was reported the other day that the tech giant has recently been on the receiving end of cyber attack by a new ransomware group known as Ransomed.vc. According to Cyber Security Connect Ransomed.vc was able to gain access to at least 6,000 files from Sony which was reported on September 25th. There is not too much that we know about Ransomed.vc other than they intend on selling Sony’s data along with the fact that they have access to other dark web forums. It was also reported that Ransomed.vc works with European Union general data and protection which makes the incident with Sony look even more suspicious. It is believed that Ransomed.vc operates out of Russia and Ukraine and that the group is attempting to use privacy laws as leverage. There are many people who are now under the impression that this recent incident concerning Sony is an ominous sign for video game developers and technology corporations around the world. But then again Sony has been a victim of cyberattacks in the past with the other major incident occurring back in 2014. Around nine years ago a hacker group known as “Guardians of Peace” was responsible for a data breach that negatively affected hundreds of employees who worked with Sony. The Guardians of Peace was responsible for obtaining personal data about Sony employees including their salary info along with details about their families and their address. There was also another incident where the PlayStation Network outage occurred back in 2011 where around 77 million accounts were compromised preventing users from using Sony’s online service. While other corporations have been targeted by ransomware attacks in the past it seems like these types of incidents are becoming more common nowadays; especially considering the recent report surrounding Microsoft’s “accidental” 38TB private data breach by an AI researcher. If large scale ransomware attacks continue to happen during the 2020’s decade it could eventually have a negative effect on the gaming world since more employees of large tech companies could end up feeling unsafe in relation to their personal data.
