
Fortnite is one of the most popular video game franchises to have emerged within the past decade and is one that has been getting a lot of mainstream attention lately for all the wrong reasons. It has been recently revealed that Epic Games has been involved an a lawsuit with the Federal Trade Commission due to the companies unethical practices in relation deceiving players into making unnecessary purchases similar to that of loot boxes. There have been many players around the world who were forced to pay more money than they should have to fully enjoy Fortnite and as a result Epic Games has agreed to a $245 million settlement with the FTC. The United State Federal Trade Commission has announced that there are thousands across America who would be entitled to compensation for Epic Games unethical practices that mainly target children. The complaint against Epic Games started back in December 2022 and came during a year where the FTC was also involved in a major legal battle against Microsoft regarding its multi-billion dollar acquisition of Activision-Blizzard. It should also be noted that Epic Games has also been in legal trouble in the past with Apple back in 2020 concerning how Fortnite was distributed on the mega corporation’s mobile and PC devices. Despite, the Fortnite franchise generating at least $26 billion in revenue since its 2017 inception its success has been surrounded with mainly by controversy where the image of its developer Epic Games has been very negative within the past three years or so.
