As many people know that Unity has been one of the most popular video game engines of the 2010’s decade. Within the past decade many developers had no major problems with the Unity game engine which is something that might eventually change starting on January 1st of 2024. The news recently broke that Unity will eventually start charging developers who meet revenue and install thresholds. Apparently, developers will eventually have to pay at least $0.20 in Runtime Fees for each installment their games get on a new device. It was revealed that fee that developers will be charged depending on what type of Unity subscription they have. Developers who decide to go with Unity Personal or Unity Plus if they surpass $200,000 in a year or more than 200K installments within a year they will be subjected to Runtime Fees. Developers who decide to use Unity Pro or Unity Enterprise accounts will be subjected to Runtime Fees if they surpass $1 million in revenue and one million dollars in lifetime installs. Apparently, this new policy regarding Runtime Fees do not apply to non gaming applications but its still something that could potential drive developers away from using the Unity engine in the future.
