Everyone remembers how popular the Mass Effect series was between the late 00’s-early 10’s. The Mass Effect franchise was considered to be one of most popular action role-playing franchises in the gaming industry over a decade ago. It seems like the popularity of the Mass Effect series went down hill following the release of Andromeda back in 2017. The game that was arguably responsible for Mass Effect’s decline in popularity was Mass Effect 3 from 2012. There is no question that killing of Commander Shepard was a bad call considering how he was the central protagonist in the first two installments from ’07-10. Mass Effect 3 was heavily criticized for having around eight different endings that were all similar but different which ultimately lead to Commander Shepard no longer being apart of the series. Despite, the backlash that Mass Effect 3 had received following its release in 2012 it still managed to reach at least seven million copies in sales due to it being overhyped. Even though, Mass Effect Andromeda reached around five million is sales following its 2017 release it was still not on the same level as the first two installments that we got during the PS3/Xbox 360 era. The absence of Commander Shepard from the Mass Effect series is something that is clearly detrimental to the franchise as a whole. Nobody was heavily interested Pathfinder Ryder who was the main character of Mass Effect: Andromeda and it makes people wonder what direction Bioware would take in a potential Mass Effect 4 in terms of storyline. If Bioware decides to develop a prequel to the first or second Mass Effect game revolving around untold secrets regarding Commander Shepard that something that would gain the attention lapsed fans of the series. But considering the fact that Bioware is cutting back on expenses and laying off employees it seems like a potential Mass Effect 4 release something that will not happen anytime soon.
