The Dead or Alive series has been around since the mid 90’s with the latest entry within the series released back in 2019. The Dead or Alive series has been on of most entertaining 3D fighting franchises in gaming history but unfortunately it has been overshadowed within past two decades or so. During the 2000’s the action-adventure genre along with 3D first person shooters were extremely popular the same way that action-adventure and role playing games were during the 2010’s. While the fighting genre had somewhat of a resurgence in terms of mainstream popularity during the 2010’s the Dead or Alive series for the most part has been overlooked. When you think about high profile fighting titles to have emerged from the 2010’s you think about games such as Mortal Kombat 9-11, Street Fighter V, Tekken 7, Dragonball FighterZ and Marvel vs Capcom 3. While games like Dead or Alive 5 or DOA 6 have received great reviews from various gaming publications they did not sell nearly as much as the Mortal Kombat games from 2010’s along with the likes Tekken 7. It should also be noted that during the second half of the 2010’s American culture had changed significantly especially relating to the objectification women which definitely had a negative impact on DOA 6 following its release. While Dead or Alive 6 reached over more than one million in relation to digital downloads the game should have had more success than it did especially considering how good DOA 5 was back in 2012. Even with Mai Shiranui from KOF appearing as a guest character Dead or Alive 6 the game did not generate the type of interest among casuals that Koei Tecmo Games was expecting. Seeing that Dead or Alive 6 underperformed from commercial standpoint the idea of a Dead or Alive 7 does not make to much sense. The level of competition within the gaming world is very high and the fighting genre is not as popular as it once was during the 90s. The Dead or Alive series is one that lasted longer than many people expected but it might be best for the series to take a hiatus for the time being.
