It seems like 2023 has been mainly a good year in general for the gaming world in relation to high profile video game releases. While a ton of good things came out of 2023 thus far in relation to gaming this year has also had it share of disconcerting news also. We have recently learned that CD Projekt Red the masterminds behind critically-acclaimed games such as Cyberpunk 2077 & The Witcher 3 will be downsizing their staff within the next year. It was reported that CD Project Red will be cutting nine percent of their staff with around one hundred jobs being cut within the next nine months. The reasons for CD Projekt Red’s latest move is something that comes as a surprise to many people within the gaming community especially considering how much revenue Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher3 has earned within the past decade. The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt has managed to sell ate least 50 million copies worldwide since its release in 2015 and Cyberpunk 2077 managed to generate approximately $116 million back in 2022. Based on what we know the CD Projekt Red’s layoffs are happening mainly because the company is currently overstaffed according to the CEO Adam Kicinski. It was reported that months following the official release of Cyberpunk 2077 employees were expected to work six-day work weeks. Despite, the added hours and pressure that was placed on the CD Projekt Red staff Cyberpunk 2077 was still a glitchy mess following its release in December 2020. While the job cuts from CD Projekt Red is not expected to happen all at once and its expected to carry on until Q1 2024. While CD Projekt Red downsizes its workforce many people wonder how this would affect the development of a potential Witcher IV game in the future.
