It seems like Microsoft has been making a ton of progress in relation to gaming especially following their court victory against the Federal Trade Commission concerning the purchase of Activision-Blizzard. The Federal Trade Commission did everything within its power to push back Microsoft’s $69 billion acquisition of Activision-Blizzard due to the premise that it violated the Sherman Act in relation to antitrust laws. However, Microsoft’s new deal with Sony says otherwise seeing the two corporations have mutually agreed to bring new Call of Duty games to the PlayStation 5 for the next decade. The Call of Duty series is considered to be one of the most beloved video game franchises of all-time and has earned at least $30 billion in revenue since its inception 20 years ago. The Call of Duty series has been third-party for so long to a point where it feels weird seeing exclusively available for on game systems. Even though, Call of Duty is still very popular today many believe that the franchise had peaked in popularity back in the late 00’s -early 10’s and even briefly in the late 2010’s. Microsoft and Sony’s long term deal concerning the Call of Duty franchise seems unbelievable considering how long both corporations have been competing with each other during the console wars. Its likely Microsoft has decided to make this ten-year deal with Sony to avoid public backlash from the online gaming community. The deal with Sony was also one of the key reasons why Microsoft beat the FTC in court. Microsoft’s Vice Chair Brad Smith had stated that he wanted to make sure the consumer satisfaction is at an all-time high and wants to bring Call of Duty to as many gaming platforms as possible.
