OutRun 2006 was one of Sega’s best racing games from the 2000’s decade. However, OutRun 2006 was also a video game that got overshadowed by a variety of racing titles that also came out during the 00’s decade. During the mid 2000’s we got to see the release of games like Gran Turismo 4, Need For Speed, Underground, Burnout Revenge and Project Gotham Racing. The racing genre of gaming was starting to evolve during the 2000’s beyond that of basic arcade gameplay. While Outrun 2006 was a fun-fast paced addictive arcade racing title with an excellent soundtrack it lacked the type of depth that you would see in modern day racing titles. The 2000’s decade in general was kinda rough for Sega because aside from the Sonic series most of the companies franchises ended up being overlooked. If Sega were to remake OutRun 2006 is today for a current generation game system its something that might appeal a niche audience of gamers considering how old it is. A reboot of the Outrun series would probably be a better idea than remakes of their older games. It seems like Gran Turismo along with the Need For Speed series has been slowly declining in popularity within the past few years which could give Sega an opportunity to shine with the Outrun series. Since Sega has plans on bringing back multiple older IP’s like Jet Set Radio and Streets of Rage they should definitely consider reviving Outrun especially since the racing genre is still considerably popular in countries like America. At one point Outrun was quite possibly the best thing Sega had going during the late 80’s before the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise began in 1991. We live in a day and age where nostalgia can sell to casuals of marketed correctly. OutRun is a franchise that is well known to causal gamers and a potentially reboot could potentially expand the franchise’s fan base while bringing back lapsed ones in the process.
