The rougelike genre of gaming is one that does not get talked about as much as many other games despite how creative and fun they are. During a majority of the 2010’s decade it seems like the action-adventure, RPG and shooter genres were mainly popular with the games in each category selling millions worldwide. There were several franchises such as Grand Theft Auto, Halo, Call of Duty, Fortnite and others that have overshadowed indie rougelike video games during the 2010’s. It should be noted that its difficult for rougelike video games to shine on Sony or Nintendo game systems especially since first-party titles tend to be top sellers for whatever game system they appear on. While RPG’s are still very popular in this day and age it seems like action role-playing games get more attention that rougelike titles which is considered more of a subgenre of that particular category. During the past decade we got to see the release of several underrated rougelike video games including Splunkey 2, Dead Cells: Return To Castlevania, Rouge Legacy 2 and Darkest Dungeon titles that mainly received good reviews from critics following their respective releases. While rougelikes are addictive and have high replay values giving players a sense of achievement some can argue that the repetition of having to go through the same areas of a video game can is somewhat of a drawback. Even though, the rougelike genre has a variety of gameplay elements that makes it exciting it has yet to surpass action role-playing games in popularity which is something that could eventually change sometime during the 2020’s decade.
