When it comes down to forgotten classics from the 16-bit Sega Genesis era of the 90’s games like Eternal Champions from ’93 comes to mind. Eternal Champions was developed and published by Sega and it was a basic fighting game with a very interesting plot. Eternal Champion featured nine characters including Shadow, Johnathan Blade, Larcen and others who had to fight in a tournament in the afterlife after being killed. The winner of the tournament in Eternal Champions got a second chance at life which is pretty dark by itself. As a fighting game Eternal Champions was really nothing special since the gameplay was almost as basic as the original Street Fighter II game from 1991. However, one of the key features that made Eternal Champions stand out from Street Fighter II that after every match the character who lost died in a very gruesome way. There were instant stage fatalities after every fight which was something that was very unexpected in Eternal Champions since the gameplay resembled Street Fighter II and even the original Fatal Fury game to some extent. It should also be noted that each character had their own hokey over the top gimmick which really did not mean anything since none of them had any character development whatsoever. Eternal Champions felt like Sega’s attempt to create their own version of Mortal Kombat but the only problem was it did not connect with the casual audience of gamers as much. If Eternal Dragon had slightly more advanced gameplay it could have been more enjoyable but the game itself was good by ’93 standards. The boss in Eternal Champion was pretty much a cheap character who could constantly revive himself and was also the one hosting the tournament within the game itself. While Eternal Champions did get a sequel later in ’95 the series never got a third major installment because it did not draw any major revenue for Sega. it should also be noted that the fighting genre of gaming was very competitive during the 90’s due to the growing popularity of the Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and the Tekken series.
