When it comes down to 2D fighting games DarkStalkers is quite possibly one of the most underrated series of the 90’s.  With characters such as Morrigan, Anakaris, Demitri Maximoff,  Felicia along with many others the DarkStalkers series is generally regarded as one that never fully got the credit that it deserved in terms of being a great fighting game.  When DarkStalkers: Night Warriors was first released in 1994 many people were impressed by the colorful 2D sprites graphics and soundtracks.  

After seeing the original DarkStalkers game for the CP II it looked impressive to many people the only problem was there were so many other fighting games that were also starting to become more popular such as Super Street II Turbo and the Mortal Kombat series.  Also, we had the rise of 3D fighting titles like Tekken and the Virtua Fighting series.  Around the mid90’s people were starting to become bored with 2D fighting games for the most part and started but not 3D titles.

Along with games like the Killer Instinct series DarkStalkers was one that deserved far more credit than it got.   Some would argue that the first three DarkStalkers games were hidden gems that Capcom had in the 90’s in regards 2D fighting titles.
