Retro Gaming 10’s- Crysis 2: (2011)

The early 10’s was such a great time to be a fan of video games especially as it related to the first person genre since we got so many high profile titles from that era. One of the few memorable titles from the early 10’s that appeared on the PS3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows was in ‘11 was Crysis 2; which was developed by Crytek and published by Electronic Arts. Crysis 2 had such a great dark yet futuristic look to it despite the fact that the game was released back in 2011. The setting for Crysis 2 was set in the not to distant future of 2023 and revolved around a deadly virus outbreak which became the main source of civil unrest in New York City. Also, a hostile alien race known as the Cephs are supposedly responsible for the virus outbreak which caused cellular destruction in humans making them the one primary antagonists of Crysis 2. It should also be noted that Jacob Hargreave the founder of CryNet system was considered to be one of the primary antagonists of Crysis 2 as well. Hargreave eventually double-crosses the main protagonist James “Alcatraz” Rodregiuz while trying to retrieve the Nanosuit 2.0 alongside the private military contractor of CryNet that he owned known as C.E.L.L. Hargreave targeting Alcatraz comes after the commander of C.E.L.L. Dominic Lockhart is killed. Dominic Lockhart listened more to the shareholders and board of directors of C.E.L.L. opposed to Hargreave which caused friction between the two. Lockhart also had a personal hatred for Nanosuits due to losing a loved one in a Nanosuit 1.0 project. Even though, Lockhart was also one of the main villains in Crysis 2 Hargreave was successful in talking Alcatraz into killing him for his own personal revenge. But Lockhart’s motives in wanting to destroy Alcatraz along with anything affiliated with the Nanosuit 2.0 was considered detrimental to humanity in the war against the Cephs.

The plot for Crysis 2 was very intriguing but also disturbing to some extent since the outbreak in the game somewhat mirrors the events of real-life as it relates COVID-19. The fictional aspect about Crysis 2 regarding the alien invasion also contributed to the quality and overall excitement of the game as well. The conflict among key characters in the game in the mist of an alien invasion and pandemic contributed to the dark & chaotic atmosphere in Crysis 2. Also, the storyline, voice-acting, futuristic world designs and weaponry were all strong positives in Crysis 2. Despite, not being quite as popular as its ‘07 sequel Crysis 2 was one of the better first person shooter games of ‘11-‘12. Since its release in ‘11 Crysis 2 managed to reach over 3 million copies in sales and was considered to be easier than Crysis 3 from ‘13; due having artificial intelligence that was less challenging. As it currently stands Crysis 2 is expected to be remastered and released on current generation consoles some time in Q4 2021. It would not be surprising in anyway if the remastered version of Crysis 2 ended up becoming as popular in ‘21 or even more so than it was in 2011; especially considering the fact that we are very close to 2023.
