Its hard to believe that Minecraft was released about a decade ago for both Microsoft Windows, macOS, Android and Linux devices. Minecraft was developed and published by Mojang Studios and was considered to be one of the most popular sandbox games of the 10’s decade. Eventually, as the popularity of Minecraft had grew the game ended up being ported to almost every console you could think of. Minecraft was ported to game systems such as: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation Vita, etc. Minecraft had included five different game modes including Survival, Hardcore, Creative and Adventure and Spectator. While Hardcore and Spectator mode were Java Edition exclusives Creative and Survival were on almost every version of Minecraft. The gameplay in Minecraft mainly consisted of players collecting resources in the form of raw materials to build the world around them; with or without the flight ability depending on the selected game mode. The blocky level designs gave players a pleasant sense of nostalgia since it look reminiscent of 3D video games from the late 90’s-early 00’s era of gaming. In some ways Minecraft was better than a variety of games within the Sim City series because players had more creative freedom. While players are limited simulation titles like Sim City where players have to use whatever the game designers included in certain titles; people could simply create whatever they wanted while trying to survive opposed to just being a spectator.
Within the past ten years Minecraft has been widely regarded as one of the most successful video games of all-time. It was reported in 2020 that Minecraft had generated $415 million in revenue while reaching approximately 176 million copies in sales worldwide. Minecraft is one of the few titles from the 10’s decade that has managed to sell more then Grand Theft Auto: V from ‘13 which is very impressive. Also, the massive success of Minecraft lead to Microsoft purchasing the sandbox block-building game for $2.5 billion back in 2014. The mobile revenue of Minecraft reached approximately $118 million by 2018 and during 2020 it averaged 131 million active monthly users which shows how popular the game still is today. Not only is Minecraft one of the most successful sandbox titles of the 10’s but it’s widely regarded as one of the greatest video games of all-time. The popularity of critically acclaimed sandbox title ultimately lead to the creation of a couple of spin-off games including: Minecraft: Story Mode, Earth and Dungeons from 2015-2020. The Minecraft series will most likely remain popular throughout the 20’s decade considering how many monthly users still play the game. Also, when it comes down to the sandbox genre of gaming Minecraft will most likely remain the greatest title ever made.
