Retro Gaming 10’s- Battlefield 3: (2011)

When it comes down to high profile first person shooter games from the 2010’s one of the few titles that instantly comes to mind is Battlefield 3 from 2011. Its hard to believe that Battlefield 3 was released over a decade ago and that game has seemingly aged gracefully since 2011. Battlefield 3 was published by Electronic Arts and developed by DICE and it pretty much one of the best first person shooter gamers of ’11 along with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The story of Battlefield 3 revolved around players controlling an American Marine Staff Sergeant named Henry Blackburn as they ventured across various locations in Iran & Iraq in order to stop the plans of a terrorist group known as PLR. The terrorist group that the United States special forces were fighting against were very dangerous because they wanted to blow up several major cities across the globe which made for an intriguing story. The were array of impressive features that was included in Battlefield 3 including skydiving along with explicit dialogue and cinematic like audio as it related to in game explosions from weapons such as grenades. Despite, the campaign for Battlefield 3 not being quite as popular as its ’05 predecessor Battlefield 2 the gameplay, visual presentation and the overall physics of this game were all strong positives. The multiplayer gameplay in Battlefield 3 was also something that many people liked because it featured modes such as: Conquest, Squad Rush along with Team and Squad Deathmatch.

Battlefield 3 was not only appealing to hardcore fans of the first person shooter genre but it was also a massive commercial success as many casuals thought the game was a masterpiece as well. In relation to sales Battlefield 3 managed to reach at least 8 million copies in sales within its first year following its release. Overall, Battlefield 3 has been said to have reached over 15 million copies in worldwide sales across all platforms including the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. Despite, its immense popular during the early 10’s Battlefield 3 was unable to outsell its competitor Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 which was developed by Activision. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was arguably one of the best installments within the entire CoD series aside from the first two Black Ops games that came between ’10-’12. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 had managed to reach around 30 million copies in relation to overall sales which was an impressive feat as it related to the first person shooter genre. Its a bit shocking that Electronic Arts put out a remake for Battlefield 3 especially considering how underwhelming Battlefield 2042 was following its release back in 2021. Electronic Arts should definitely remaster Battlefield 3 sometime later down the line especially since its ten year anniversary passed in 2021. A remake of Battlefield 3 would look amazing on current generation game systems such as PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X.
