The PlayStation 4 has managed to become one of the most successful video game consoles of the past decade. Since its release back in late 2013 the PS4 managed to surpass 117 million units in worldwide sales within the past decade. When it comes down to first party video games in general it seems like Sony has published more high profile titles than their competitors Nintendo and Microsoft with games like Marvel’s Spider Man, God of War (2018), Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Ghost of Tsushima. It feels like Sony has produced stronger and more memorable first party games during the PS4 generation opposed to the PS3. As far as the Nintendo Switch is concerned there some big titles like Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8: Deluxe and others also received a ton of mainstream attention following their respective releases. However, when it comes down to best selling video games for the Nintendo Switch they were mainly Mario and Zelda games. The PlayStation 4 has more games that appeal to young adults while the Switch console has more titles were geared towards children. Since its releaser Mario Kart 8: Deluxe has managed to reach over 52 million in sales which is way higher than the Marvel’s Spider Man game from 2018 which hit around 20 million units in sales. It should also be noted that Super Mario Odyssey managed to reach over 25 million units in sales on the Switch console and has surpassed the likes of Uncharted 4, God of War and Marvel’s Spider-Man. While Mario in general is a bigger name than almost anything released on the PS4 it feels like Sony’s eighth generation game system had more variety in relation to licensed video games that sold millions.
