Super Mario 64 (1996) vs Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998) which game more popular?

When it comes down to top games that appeared on the Nintendo 64 during the mid to late 90’s there are several titles that come to mind. But there is no doubt that Super Mario 64 along with the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time are two of the biggest games to have been released on the Nintendo 64. Since its initial release in 1996 Super Mario 64 has managed to sell over 11 million units worldwide and has been seen as the best selling video game on the Nintendo 64 in general. Super Mario 64 was an unforgettable 3D platformer with cool levels and exciting gameplay that allowed players to experience Mario’s journey in a completely different way.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time which was released back in November 1998 was arguably one of the best titles within its entire series. Ever since, Ocarina of Time was released the game has managed to sell over 7 million units worldwide. Zelda: Ocarina of Time was praised for various qualities including its graphics, gameplay along with having great storytelling. There are also various side quests for players to engage in Ocarina of Time giving the game somewhat of an RPG-like feel which contributed to its overall replay value. Choosing between Super Mario 64 and Zelda: Ocarina of Time is difficult and most likely boils down to which video game series one likes more.

Could the original StarCraft game have worked on the Sega Dreamcast?

It’s hard to believe that the StarCraft series has been around since the late 90’s when the original game was released for systems such as the N64 and Microsoft Windows. However, one of the strangest things about the original StarCraft title was that it was never ported for the Sega Dreamcast or even the PS1 which definitely would have been better options as far as graphics and gameplay are both concerned. While the N64 was arguably more powerful than the PS1 the 128 bit Sega Dreamcast handled both 2D and 3D games better than the N64.

Also, the original StarCraft for the N64 is hardly ever mentioned since there were many 3D titles such as Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and others that overshadowed it during the late 90’s. While Dreamcast had some big games such as Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Shemune, Crazy Taxi and others StarCraft May not have been overshadowed to the same extent as it was on the N64. The N64 was mainly built for 3D gameplay so having the original StarCraft game in the 64 bit console was somewhat questionable in the eyes of many people.

Metroid 64 vs Earthbound 64 which unreleased game for the N64 was a bigger deal?

When it comes down to video games from the 90’s we got to see plenty of great titles on the N64 such Super Mario 64, Banjo Koozie, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and many more.  While the Mario and Zelda series were btoh big on the NES along with the SNES we got to see brand new games featured on the Nintendo 64.  Seeing how successful both Earthbound and Super Metroid was for the SNES many peope were hoping that they would eventually see Metroid and Earthbound on the Nintendo 64 as well.   Unfortunately, neither Metroid or the Earthbound series never had a game on the N64 despite how popular they both were on the SNES.

Following the success of Super Metroid in 1994 one of the biggest games in the series that Nintendo gave us was Metroid Prime which was eventually released for the Nintendo GameCube back in 2002.  Also, Mother 3 ended up being  developed by 1-UP Studio & HAL Laboratory and released exclusively in Japan for the Game Boy Advance back in 2006.  The fact that Metroid Prime appeared on the GameCube in 2002 made the game even more enjoyable considering the fact that it was the first major game in the series since the early 90’s.  As an action adventure game Metroid Prime was seen as one of the best by numerous gaming publications in 2002.  If anything Nintendo waiting to release a Metroid title for the GameCube console and skipping the N64 was a good decision in the long run.   While Earthbound 64 was a title that many people wanted to see the designers of the game considered it to be a very difficult task which let to the game being cancelled altogether by the developers who worked on the game.  In terms of which titles many people would have preferred to see on the N64 between Metroid 64 and Earthbound 64 is debatable.  However, some would probably give the edge to Earthbound 64 on being the biggest game to never have made it to the N64 since the idea of developing a Metroid 64 was never but into practice by Nintendo or any other video game companies.

Nintendo 64 vs Nintendo DS which game console was more popular?

When it comes down to Nintendo based game consoles the N64 was arguably just as popular in the mid to late 90’s as the Nintendo DS was during the early 00’s.  In terms of which game console was better overall really depends on who you ask.  In terms of overall sales the Nintendo 64 has managed to sell over 23 million units worldwide since the console was first released back in September 1996.   With games such as Super Mario 64, Star Fox 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, 007 Goldeneye and Perfect Dark the Nintendo 64 was arguably better at producing 3D video games than the PS1 as far as graphics are concerned.

Ever since, the Nintendo DS was first released back in November 2004 it has managed to sell over 154 million units worldwide and is seen as one of the best selling game consoles of all time under the PlayStation 2.  While the Nintendo 64 had some great titles back in the late 90’s and the year 2000 the Nintendo DS got to see the return of SNES Classics such as Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest IV, Final Fantasy III & IV among others.  We also managed to get games such Pokemon Heart Gold, Diamond and Pearl along with Black & White which we big sellers on the Nintendo DS throughout out a majority of the 00’s and the early 10’s.  Not did the Nintendo DS seem to have more games but  the actual game system itself was available in retail for about a decade opposed to the N64 which was discontinued in the Spring of 2002.  Also, one of the top things that stands out about the Nintendo DS was the fact that the game system had a better frame rate than the N64 despite being a handheld console.  If anything the Nintendo DS was surprisingly way more successful than many people could have ever imagined.

Should there have been an Actraiser III for the Nintendo 64?

When it comes down to platform city simulation building games the Actraiser series for the SNES instantly comes to mind. There were so many things about Actraiser 1 & 2 that made the game appealing including the graphics, gameplay along with the soundtrack which was composed by Yuzo Koshiro.   Both the first and second Actraiser game was somewhat popular back in the early 90’s and it raises questions on why Quintet never decided to make an Actraiser III for the Nintendo 64 back in the mid to late 90’s.  Its no secret that the Nintendo 64 was not too big on 2D titles and often featured 3D games between 1996 and 2000.

However, a sequel to Actraiser II could have definitely have worked on PS1 back in the mid to late 90’s.  When it came down to 2D video games the PS1 was full of games that had great animation that you would never see on the N64.  While the idea of having a 3D Actraiser game for the Nintendo 64 would have been pretty cool in theory it would not only be hard to pull off in practice but the finished product may have feel below the expectations of many people.

Mario Kart 64 vs Gran Turismo which racing game was better?

During the mid to late 90’s the world got to witness the release of two of the most popular racing video games ever.  When Mario Kart 64 was released for the Nintendo 64 in late 1996 and early 1997 it was one of the biggest titles of the racing genre. Since it’s release Mario Kart 64 has managed to sell 9.8 million units worldwide which is impressive. After all, some can make the argument that the graphics of Mario Kart 64 was superior in comparison to the original Gran Turismo title that Polyphony Digital released back in 1998.

However, the original Gran Turismo game was way more realistic than Mario Kart 64 and appealed more to adult gamers as opposed to kids. Not did players have the option to compete in Arcade and Simulation Mode But they also had the ability to earn driver licenses while makin money which Mario Kart 64 did not have. Also, in terms of sales the original Gran Turismo game reach over 10 million units worldwide in terms of sales and was one of the top games for the PS1. It’s very hard to choose between Mario Kart 64 and the original Gran Turismo game but both were classics that are remembered to this day by retro gamers who lived through the mid to late 90’s.

Could 2D Super Mario games have worked on the N64?

It’s a bit strange that when we look back at N64 games during the 90’s there are almost no 2D Mario titles on that console. There is not question that Nintendo was more focused on creating some of the best 3D titles that they possibly could. With games like Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64 there was really no need to go back to 2D visuals for the Nintendo 64.

If anything keeping 2D games on Game Boy and Game Boy Advance was a much better idea. Even though, there were more 2D games on the PS1 opposed to the N64 it seemed Nintendo’s ability to create the best 3D video games was one of the main things that made the company stand out from its competitors until Sega came out with the 128 bit Dreamcast console in 1998. While having 2D Super Mario games on the N64 could have worked out in theory they may not have been as successful as titles such as Super Mario 64 in practice.
